Dr Wilkinson was awarded life-time membership of British Pain Society (BPS) in 2020 for outstanding contributions in multidisciplinary Pain Management. His citation referenced excellence in leadership, standards, education, and clinical rehabilitation outlining that, at that time, he had chaired 18 National & 3 International professional committees including the “Painless” public BPS awareness campaign and was a former Vice President and Board Member of the BPS.
Dr Wilkinson was Chair of UK Professional Standards Committee (PSC), Faculty of Pain Medicine (FPM) and board member for 6 years. As chair of the PSC, he has driven 30 refreshed/ 25 new FPM publications, >60 consultations and 6 position statements where the use of evidence to inform professional standards of care has been central.
He represented the FPM/RCOA to the CMO on the opioid crisis and had an FPM leadership role in National COVID response including closing/ opening & extensive clinical guidance.
He is past-Chair of the Educational SIG and past-Chair of the Clinical Ethics and Legal SIG of the International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP), the latter for which he remains a serving member. He received commendation for Chairmanship of 2018 International Taskforce for the Global Year for Excellence in Pain Education a major patient, professional governmental and public health iniative to improve understanding of pain wordwide.He served on the executive of the FPM and was recently awarded an appointed position and continues on the FPM board. Amongst current roles, he is Chair of a major new UK working group (set up 2024), the pragmatic, personalised care pathway group, with aim to define the best care for patients for all the common pain conditions to build on but manage the limitations of conventional population-based evidence.
He remains a committed NHS pain consultant in a major UK University teaching hospital at Newcastle NHS Trust where he was the Service director for around a decade.

He is an experienced medicolegal expert with over 20 years experience, has attended Court multiple times and provided evidence to the GMC and Parliamentary Ombusman for a decade. His instructions are around 60:40 claimant:defendant. He also undertaken single joint instructions. He has complete a report usually within 4/52 of appointment and can appoint within 4 weeks ordinarily. He will complete a typical condition and prognosis report in 7-9 hours depending on the volume of Medical records (estimate for around 500 pages or under) and the case complexity.
